Bookworm that I am, I never seem to be able to go anywhere without picking up a new read – and New York City is no exception. I always come to the city with a list prepared of the books I hope to purchase before I leave and they tend to be acquired at the following bookstores. For my fellow avid readers, I hope this list will serve you well in your never-ending search for literature! (I feel you)
5. Idlewild Books
Idlewild is an independent bookstore comprised entirely of travel literature. So, what could be more perfect? This is my go-to place in NYC for travel guides and novels based on travel stories, which I always tend to gravitate towards in the summertime. Idlewild also offers language classes, which would be fantastic to take advantage of if you are local or staying in the city for a longer period of time.

4. 192 Books
192 Books is a small bookstore in Chelsea specializing in 4 specific categories: children’s books, literary fiction, translated literature, and art, which is why it fits in so perfectly with Chelsea’s gallery district. The bookstore is fairly small but it makes up for the size with its charm and intimate setting.

3. Housing Works Bookstore Café
Housing Works Bookstore has recently been added to my list of must-visit places the next time I’m in the city. This secondhand book shop features a full-service cafe (open as long as the bookstore is), literature of any and all genres, and hosts a number of events and workshops. The best part being that all proceeds are donated to support New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS.

2. Argosy Book Store
Argosy Book Store occupies a six story townhouse and features first editions and out-of-print/rare volumes. The bookstore has a pretty unique history to it, serving customers from Franklin D. Roosevelt and Jacqueline Kennedy to Michael Jackson and Donatella Versace. So, pretty much my every dream. It is also featured on Vogue’s list of recommended bookstores in NYC.. so it doesn’t really get any better than that!

1. Strand Bookstore
Ah, home sweet home. I visited Strand Bookstore as my first trip back to the city as a teenager and fell in love instantaneously. Trust me when I say I go back to Strand with a list nearly every time I go to New York and I do that quite frequently! Strand is home to 18 miles (that’s right) of books from every genre you can possibly imagine with an impressive selection of vinyls and bookstore souvenirs and a layout that makes it easy to find literature to suit your specific tastes. You can always find me picking up a new print of a classic novel or back in the aisles housing the volumes on American presidents! I would live here if I could and I cannot recommend this store enough to you.

I’m as bibliophilic as they come, so if I missed any of your favorite bookstores in NYC, please tell me in the comments below so I can check them out next time!
